Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from the fossilized remains of ancient algae. Rich in silica, it is amazingly versatile: it can be used medicinally for many ailments, taken internally for more supple skin, used for various health and beauty benefits, and to create simple and natural health and beauty treatments, DIY soaps, deodorants, face masks and shampoos. Diatomaceous earth can even help out on the home and garden for a safe and natural way to prevent pests. It can keep your pets flea and tick free and your kitchen safe from creepy crawlies. In the garden, it makes an excellent organic pest deterrent. Replace toxic cleansers and try using D. Earth as a cleaning scrub or stain remover. Diatomaceous earth can also be used for killing internal parasites such as intestinal worms and other harmful organisms in humans and animals. As you can see it is a very useful substance!
Benefits of Internal Use:
One teaspoon of diatomaceous earth stirred into water, juice, or your favorite smoothie has amazing detoxification properties. The silica content means heathier hair, teeth, fingernails and bones. It is also used to reduce high cholesterol levels and alleviate constipation while detoxifying the digestive tract.
Beauty Uses:
Diatomaceous earth is a wonderfully gentle way to treat acne, remove dead skin cells while detoxifying the pores, and absorb excess oil. Used as a tooth powder, it can brighten and whiten your smile and strengthen your teeth. In a DIY hair mask, it can repair damage and add strength and volume. If you are feeling ambitious you can even make your own soaps and shampoos!
Diatomaceous Earth Face Scrub/Mask:
Mix a spoonful of the powder with a little water, or try mixing it with honey for acne-prone skin, or coconut oil for dry skin (coconut oil can also help heal acne.) Add more powder or liquid as needed until you have a nice creamy consistency. You can mix a little in the palm of your hand for a quick treat, or you could mix a larger amount, adding any essential oils you might like for added benefits. To use as a face wash, gently scrub your skin with the mixture and then rinse. To use as a mask, you might want to make a thicker blend. Smooth over your face and allow to dry for about 8 minutes, then rinse.
Household Uses: Try using it as a scrub, to deodorize your refrigerator, or sprinkle a little in the back of food storage areas to repel pests.
*Note: This product is certified food-grade, pure and safe for internal use. Only food-grade Diatomaceous Earth should be taken internally.
A Little History and Science:
-Diatomaceous means "full of diatoms" (single-celled honeycomb structured algae organisms encased in silicon exoskeletons) .
-Silica plays a huge role in lots of body functions and it has an immediate relationship with mineral absorption.
-By solidifying the enamel, silica prevents tooth decay and preserves healthy teeth. Silica also prevents bleeding gums, gum atrophy, and recession that trigger loss of teeth. Silica effectively fights caries (ulceration and also the decay of the bone or of the tooth) and inflammation. Our hair and skin require silica for similar purpose just like other tissues. As you may know, the supporting collagen underneath skin improves elasticity and looks. Collagen owes that quality to silica, which supplies an attractive complexion that's a lot more than skin deep.
-Silica has a direct relation to absorption of all other minerals that the human body demands in order to keep up good health.
